Full course description
What becomes possible when learning extends beyond the traditional walls of the classroom? Grounded in current research on experiential learning, community partnerships, and student engagement, "Beyond the Walls" is designed for educators who want to deepen the relevance of their teaching without abandoning what already works. Whether you teach in a small rural town or a larger urban district, your community is full of untapped resources; people, places, and problems waiting to be part of the learning.
Through this course, you will explore the academic evidence behind community-connected learning and examine how your peers are doing it. Rather than focusing on large-scale change, this course encourages participants to identify small, manageable shifts that fit their unique setting and goals. Whether you are just beginning to explore these concepts or looking to expand existing practices, you will leave with new ideas, practical tools, and a personalized plan for creating learning experiences that are authentic, student-centered, and connected to the world beyond the classroom.
Please feel free to contact the instructor with any questions about the course.
Upon completion, participants will be eligible for 1 graduate credit through VCSU.
